Students will learn the importance of shelter and where to seek it. Students will actively pitch a tent and practice building shelters with and without tarps, using other objects they might find outdoors. Students will also be involved in orienteering activities using compasses and learn to survive off the land by understanding what can be eaten and drank and what flowers, plants and insects to stay away from. Students will build a water filter using, rocks, charcoal and soil, and create a flashlight with batteries, aluminum foil and light bulbs. Students will also discuss disaster preparedness, learn first aid basics and build a survival kit.
